A group of seven accused members of Germany's far-left organization stand trial over multiple violent incidents

Seven individuals accused of being the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network began their trial on Tuesday, accused for violent actions against rightwing extremists that earned them the nickname “the hammer group”.

International terrorist designation and legal charges

Recently, the United States designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist group together with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany state the network was responsible for targeting locations in Germany and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are said to have employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several with serious injuries.

Trial details and international connections

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is expected to run until July 2026 in the city of Dresden. Two defendants, identified as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in Budapest during early 2023, around an yearly gathering known as the “day of honor” that draws rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T., is currently on trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted violent acts against far-right activists prior to the identical event in 2023.

Historical background and organizational structure

The former East Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a high-ranking member within the organization, responsible for planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M, he is accused of organizing instruction courses where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. At depots managed by Paul M, the group reportedly stockpiled hammers, irritant sprays, disguises and communication devices.

Previous convictions and global responses

A different activist previously active with the organization, Lina E, became a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing makes group members barred from entering the US, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the American economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany welcomed the American move and called on the German administration to take similar action. However, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The threat posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and particularly violent members have received convictions or are in custody.”
