Whenever a significant honors show nears, there’s always a clamor for the addition additional classifications to acknowledge unsung work and delight the hearts of fans dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. So would board games, this being someone's personal cause. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification supporting my request is the most urgent and important of all. Here's the proposal: We need a category for puzzle games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why movie academies avoid this approach. Yet it remains a necessary evil for the industry of gaming, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.
To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.
Existing Game Classification System
Leading game ceremonies presently include genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types successfully include numerous genres, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.
Different situation exists for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: structural challenges of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.
Acknowledgment Issues
Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers released every year that have no home during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.
- A renowned logic title got overlooked in any category during that awards season
- A different innovative game was excluded that year
- Popular arranging title was overlooked recently
- Limited numbers of logic titles scraped into niche award types
Significance of Puzzle Games
These are often small games, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most engaged experiences globally and have been for an extended period.
The legendary block-stacking game competes with popular creative games competing to become most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, while interacting with almost every other genre.
The Solution and Justification
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. You could fill multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.
And to reiterate, these represent titles that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators are working at the hard edge of video game design, developing some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Similar to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
